The day was designed as a way to give back to those who helped make theaters a popular destination this summer, The Cinema Foundation told The Associated Press.

“After this summer’s record-breaking return to theaters, we wanted to do something to celebrate the release of the movies,” Jackie Brenneman, president of the Cinema Foundation, said in a statement to The Associated Press. “We’re doing this by offering a ‘thank you’ to moviegoers who made it this summer, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t returned yet.”
