Montgomery Locks and Dam is getting another round of funding that finally helps complete a massive project. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh will receive an $857 million investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act. One of the goals is to build a new 600-foot-long lock room in Montgomery as part of improvements for the Upper Ohio Navigation Project. “It is on top of another investment that was made some time ago and the money will continue to come. Right now, in Pennsylvania alone, $17 billion is going to the state of Pennsylvania alone for roads, bridges, airports, ports and waterways,” said White House Infrastructure Implementation Coordinator Mitch Landrieu. On Tuesday, Sen. Bob Casey and Congressman Conor Lamb toured the aging Montgomery Locks in Beaver County. It was built in the 1930s. In the past, engineers called it a safety hazard for boats being locked. Another concern was a crack running through the wall that holds the locker rooms together. An estimated 15 to 20 million tons of material moves through the Upper Ohio System each year, more than half of which is coal. Lawmakers said the investment will benefit the region and beyond. “We can’t we move commerce. We can’t move goods unless these locks and dams are repaired, they’re not sustainable, they’re not reliable. It affects the whole country,” Casey said. “We all want manufacturing in bottom line because of the Shell plant, we want other companies to come in and create more jobs right here, and what we want them to hear when they look at these places. if this region gets its act together on infrastructure,” said Congressman Conor Lamb. Construction for Montgomery Lock is expected to be completed more than a decade from now, in late 2034.
