Bryan Cultural Series Surf and Sounds Chamber Music returns to the Outer Banks

The Surf and Sounds chamber music series features 4 free concerts featuring performances by world-class musicians.

The joy and beauty of classical music returns as the Don & Catharine Bryan Cultural Series and the Dare County Arts Council welcome the 8th Annual Surf and Sounds Chamber Music Series to the Outer Banks.

Four performances are scheduled and all performances will feature violinist Siwoo Kim, violist Luke Fleming and music director Jake Fowler on cello.

The Bryan Cultural Series Surf and Sounds Chamber Music concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m., admission is free for all.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 23 at All Saints Episcopal Church in South Shores.
  • Wednesday, August 24 at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Andrews By-The-Sea at Nags Head.
  • Thursday, August 25 Cape Hatteras High School in Buxton will host the Surf and Sounds Series.
  • Friday, August 26 Dare County Arts Council Gallery in Manteo.

The first shows will be Tuesday, August 23 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores and Wednesday, August 24 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Andrews By-The-Sea at Nags Head. Dr. Amanda Halstead, who has performed in the past with Surf and Sounds Chamber Music, is an extremely talented pianist whose understanding and love of music allows her to play even the most difficult compositions with an understanding that helps bring music in life. will accompany the verses. Both performances are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free to the public

Flutist Debra Cross will perform with Fowler and Halstead in the first composition of the evening, Phillipe Gaubert’s Three watercolors for flute, cello and piano. Cross is principal flutist for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra with a string of other credits to her name.

The Southern Shores and Nags Head concerts will feature the most modern compositions of Gaubert and Nadia Boulanger. The performance will include that of Robert Schumann Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, op. 47.

Cape Hatteras High School in Buxton will host the Surf and Sounds series on Thursday, August 25th with a final Outer Banks performance at the Dare County Arts Council Gallery in Manteo on Friday, August 26th. The concerts will start at 19:30, admission is free for all.

Oboist Jaren Atherholt will accompany Fleming, Fowler and Kim in the program, which will feature two selections from Mozart. His Variations for violin, viola and cello K.563 it’s a stringed trio. His Oboe Quartet in F major K.370. Benjamin Britten Fantasy Quartet, op. 2 will also be performed. Atherholt is Assistant Professor of Oboe at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Jaren spends her summer performing at the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and has participated in the Aspen Music Festival, Verbier Festival Orchestra, Music Academy of the West and Spoleto Festival USA

The musicians of the string quartet Surf and Sounds have a well-deserved international reputation for their creative abilities, performing to audiences throughout North America, Europe and Asia. An evening spent with the musicians of the Surf and Sounds Chamber Music Series brings to life the beauty, artistry and genius of great composers. Performed by world-class musicians, it turns an Outer Banks evening into a time of magic.

The Bryan Cultural Series is a non-profit organization formed in 2012. The board of directors consists of nine community leaders dedicated to providing a variety of high-quality cultural events. These events will include a variety of visual, literary and performing arts. The board strives to recruit from talent that has achieved regional and national recognition to maintain a high standard.
