A good heist movie needs a few key components. There must be something to steal, be it money, power or something that will help get these two. He must also be quick and logical, and he must be smarter than the audience watching him. Without these three key components, you’ll be sitting around wondering what’s going to happen. With that said, let’s delve into some of the best heist movies the 21st century has to offer.

Ant-Man (2015)

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man

Right at the beginning of the MCU trying to diversify their movies, make them less cookie-cutter, and generally stretch into being more than just a superhero movie; Ant-Man delivers on both the heist front and the good guys vs. bad guys front. It also features for the first time (to my mind) a criminal returning the thing they stole themselves, which is different.

Baby Driver (2017)

Movies and music have gone hand in hand since they first discovered how to put sound on silent films about a hundred years ago. Few films have managed to make the two connect as seamlessly as Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver did. Featuring firefights, lots of impressive and fast driving, and a surprisingly moving bond between the protagonist and his adoptive father, you won’t go wrong watching this one.

The Beginning (2010)

Most heist movies spend their time explaining what bank, corporation, or house they’re going to break into and what they’re trying to steal from their sign. starting spends the first half explaining the plan to break into their mark’s mind, and then instead of stealing, they’re giving/planting an idea in his head for their own benefit. This barely scratches the surface of what is truly one of Nolan’s best.

Inside Man (2006)

heist movie
Kim Director as Stevie and Clive Owen as Dalton Russell

Starring Denzel Washington and, at the time, a wildly popular Clive Owen, Inner Man it will have you guessing from the start. Which is a heist movie that is equal parts simple and complicated. Showing that bad people aren’t necessarily bad, even if they do bad things, Inner Man it’s a heist movie that at first seems by the numbers, then quickly becomes much more.

Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

heist movie
Scott Caan (left) as Turk Malloy and Casey Affleck as Virgil Malloy

A remake of the famous ‘Rat Pack’ movie of the same name from the 60s, Ocean’s Eleven spends its considerable runtime explaining the entire heist, from start to finish, and yet gives us more than a few surprises when it finally happens. Aside from a very questionable English accent from Don Cheadle, it’s a solid and fun entry into the heist movie genre.

The City (2010)

Directing and acting in the same movie should be no small feat, but as shown several times throughout his career, when Ben Affleck truly believes in a project, he can knock it out of the park. With a host of familiar and capable faces starring alongside Affleck, the film will quickly immerse you in the story and before you know it, you’ll be looking at the title.

Widows (2018)

Cast of Widows (2018).

A truly succinct name, Widows is the story of a group of women who come together after losing their respective partners in a shootout with the police. Deciding to carry out the heist that their partners were planning, although some were forced to do it, they are trying to get a significant amount of money from a local politician, with the aim of paying off a local gangster that their partners owed .

Hopefully we’ll continue to get some really cool heist movies coming out in the next few years, but for now, we’re not fighting with what we’ve got.
