Kid Omega may have taken the spotlight X-Force #29, but now that Deadpool has been accepted as a member of X-Force, he’s stomping his feet and being heard. Ben Percy and Robert Gill shake things up X-Force #30 in some ways, writing a big change for the series. Or with Deadpool in it, at least some headaches, laughs and lots of severed limbs.

X-Force #30 opens with Wolverine chopping down the tree in Krakoa that represents her face. He wants to know where Kid Omega went and he wants to know now. This scene establishes the fact that Wolverine is leaving the island and X-Force, at least for now. This also establishes the fact that Deadpool worries Wolverine is not the focus as if it were the last issues, but instead, he can insult others. This allows Percy to play with the much tougher relationship between Omega Red and Deadpool. Boy, does it go bad for Deadpool.

Honestly, though, this opening scene with Wolverine might be the weakest part of the issue. From there, we’re given some primo time with Kraven, the main villain of the new story arc. Percy does an incredible job getting inside his head and showing the man he lives to hunt. There is an intimacy explored through these subtitles to show how seriously Kraven takes hunting, killing and then keeping the spoils of his kills. It’s very well done and sets up a cliffhanger that should have readers waiting in anticipation.

A lot of time is spent in this issue showing Deadpool hanging out in Krakow. He’s been wanting to get in for years, so it’s nice to give him the win here. Gill handles the comedy well, capturing the sheer annoyance that Deadpool gives off by simply hanging around. The dialogue helps, of course, and is worth an audible chuckle or two. Omega Red stands out as a visual highlight, and it’s big, scary, and weird as hell.

Mixed in with Deadpool, Wolverine leaving, and Kraven are a few pages of clues that give context to how X-Force is dealing with the world knowing about the revivals. This leads to a powerful scene where the protesters have kidnapped a key mutant and demand some justice in the way of guns and violence. Percy is layering in some political trouble that X-Force will soon be forced to deal with while settling the villain and the chaotic nature of Deadpool into the team. All of these elements combine into a satisfying issue, quite dense in the grand scheme of things.

X-Force #30 is a satisfying chapter in a new story arc that makes full use of Deadpool and the comedy he brings. Juxtaposed against Deadpool are a deadly serious Kraven and Omega Red, creating a great dynamic worth exploring further in future issues. X-Force continues to show how to maximize the fun.

Deadpool and Omega Red are great creators of chaos in this series

Kraven’s credits do well to show that he is a man who is passionate about hunting

Robert Gill shows that he is great at timing comedy with visuals

Wolverine’s opening scene isn’t as fun as the rest of the issue and seems a bit long
